There was a story published recently how copiers contain large hard drives that capture much of the information copied. Talk about an easy way way to do identity thief! Think about your accountant or the copy machine at your local office supply or shipping store and the amount of sensitive information sitting on those devices. Hopefully they all have very solid asset retirement programs in place that include data destruction before the machines are resold to a wholesaler?

I’m curious as to why they put such large drives on these machines. Wouldn’t something smaller have served the same purpose and reduced the amount of available data? Anyway being aware of this and having a plan for data destruction makes sense here as it does for any device storing data.

There is a wide variation in the types of goods collected for recycling by state with IL and NY handling the largest variety of products. But the growth and proliferation of new products along with rapid obsolecence means that we still have a long way to go in managing this problem.

Reduce, reuse and recycle still has to be emphasized.
